We pride ourselves on encouraging and supporting female match officials at W7s.
"It has always been a goal to have an all female match official team since the first event in 2018 and to see it grow to a point where we are unable to invite everyone is testament to the environment that the MOs create." Said Woody. "For me it is important because I feel that the girls need to see other positions within our sport, playing isn't for everyone but rugby truly is."
Laura and Elly tell Frankie why they love officiating at W7s
Each year we select a team of female match officials for each event, from experienced MO's, returning MO's and those who want to gain experience.
We then split the teams into groups of 3, every pitch has 2 ARs and 1 referee. The 3 MOs will rotate, whilst completing 5-6 14 minute games, before swapping with another team. Each team will do this twice during each day. We also have a 2-3 MOs who swap in and out to help with the load as we want the MOs to enjoy the weekend as much as the girls.
Additionally, those selected will be placed in the a WhatsApp group with current and past MO's, some of which are now officiating at 6 Nations. This is to continue to supportive environment, one that sees those in the group travelling to support each other.
We like to make sure that new MOs get a fair chance to attend, be that to gain the experience as a newbie or to gain experience of being part of a festival MO team.
